Sodom 1649 BC

Lot’s heart hammered as he slipped the last message under the gate. He hurried away from the estate of one of the wealthiest families in Sodom, the wife on the list but not the husband. His message to all of them was simple. If immediate action weren’t taken to rid Sodom of its sinful ways, proof of their participation in these sinful acts would be provided to the citizenry, and their reputations and their family honor would be destroyed.

As he hurried away, cringing with every step that echoed on the stone street, he found himself eager for tomorrow night’s party. He was certain that many of the names from the list were invited. All except the two he had left off would receive their messages when they woke in the morning, and he had to wonder how many would still attend the debauchery. It would be a good indicator as to whether his plan was working.

He was certain it would.

It was one thing to participate in such events among like-minded individuals. It was an entirely different thing to have such things made known to friends, neighbors, and family. Yet as he continued to make his way home, it gave him the opportunity to reevaluate his thinking. He had said that it would be hard to find ten good men in Sodom. It was an exaggeration, of course, meant to make a point. He was certain that in the entirety of the city, there were scores of good men, if not hundreds, perhaps even thousands.

But where were they? They were silent, if they existed at all. The sinful acts that distressed him so much were on display for all to see. Brothels, gambling houses, and drinking establishments. None were hidden away, their doors to the world opening to the front of the street, not some rear alleyway. Every customer walked in and out without shame. Would these people he had just threatened even care that their depravity became public?

He rounded a corner and ran into a man standing with his eyes closed. “Pardon me.” Lot stepped around him, nearly tripping over a woman on her knees in front of the man, and growled in frustration as his point was proven. Nobody cared. Did he suspect that the majority of Sodom citizens frequented these establishments? No, he didn’t. He was sure it was a minority, though that minority was substantial. It was the fact that everyone appeared to tolerate it. Nobody said anything, which suggested acceptance.

Though it could be resignation. No one dared speak up because those behind the dens of iniquity were often violent—if anyone threatened their livelihood, extreme violence was often the response. Not two weeks ago, a rabbi had been beaten nearly to death preaching that all these establishments should be closed on the Sabbath. He was still recovering. And what had the reaction of the public been? Shock and horror at what had been done, yet no protests, no demand for justice. Instead, life just went on as it always had.
